Extension Master Gardeners of Pasquotank County have participated in the annual Currituck Flower and Garden Show for many years now. It is a two day show hosted by the Currituck County Extension Master Gardeners at their Extension Center. Once we hear what the theme for the show will be, we begin brainstorming ideas for our display. This year the theme was “Garden Up.”
Vertical gardens don’t need to be vertically expensive
The group decided to demonstrate vertical gardening methods that anyone could do with easy-to-find materials. We titled our display “Up the Garden Path”. Each element of the display was mapped out and an initial layout plan was developed for our 10’x 20’ space. Individuals and teams of Master Gardeners volunteered to build each specific element of the display.
In the weeks prior to the show, two practice set-ups were held followed by a final dress rehearsal where all the display items we brought together and the layout was finalized. Early on the morning of the show everyone arrived at the rehearsal site with trucks and wheelbarrows. We transported the materials to the Extension Center, set-up our displays and waited for the fun to begin.
Our Extension Master Gardener volunteers manned the booth to answer questions about the different vertical gardening plans. We received a lot of interest and wonderful comments about this year’s display. Many of the shows attendees told us they already had a lot of the materials around the house and they were taking some of these great ideas home to create their own vertical gardens, such as the recycled shoe bag planter or cement block planter wall!
